China Sourcing Hubs: How to Pick the Right City for Your Product
A buyer in Manchester asks three suppliers to quote 3,000 stainless steel vacuum flasks. All three answers arrive within a day, all at 304 stainless, all with the same logo file. The prices come back at $2.10, $3.40 and $4.80. That gap is not negotiation skill and it is not luck. One factory sits inside the Yongkang cluster, one is a trading office in Shenzhen buying from that cluster, and one is a factory in the wrong province paying freight and agent fees on every component.
China does not have one national supply chain. It has dozens of local ones, and each grew around a specific product. Mold makers settle where mold buyers already are, so tooling gets cheaper and revisions get faster in ways no product page will show you. Choose the wrong city and you carry a middleman margin for the life of the product. Choose the right one and your very first quote is already near the floor.
Below is the working map we use internally. It covers the categories our clients source most, the city that leads each one, and what actually changes when you buy there.
Why the hub sets your price before you negotiate
Three things happen inside a genuine cluster, and none of them appear in a supplier’s reply. Tooling is local, so a new mold costs less and a revision takes days rather than weeks. Second-tier suppliers compete for the same order, so a factory that loses your deal on Monday re-quotes it on Tuesday with sharper numbers. And the labor pool already knows your product, which shows up as fewer defects in the first production run instead of the third.
The reverse is just as reliable. A factory outside its cluster buys components from the cluster, adds its own margin, and still ships a higher defect rate. That is the $2.10 flask sitting next to the $4.80 one.
So the first question is never “which supplier”. It is “which city”.
The hub map at a glance
| Product family | Leading hub | What the hub is known for | Typical starting MOQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen appliances | Shunde, Foshan (Guangdong) | Blenders, fans, air fryers; full export service network | 500 to 1,000 units |
| Budget small appliances | Cixi (Zhejiang) | Juicers, kettles, heaters at aggressive price points | 1,000 units |
| Stainless drinkware and cookware | Yongkang (Zhejiang) | Vacuum flasks, pots, cutlery; deep local tooling | 1,000 units |
| Plastic housewares | Huangyan, Taizhou (Zhejiang) | Storage boxes, buckets; top-tier mold makers | 3,000 units or by mold |
| Hotel supplies and disposables | Hangji, Yangzhou (Jiangsu) | Roughly a third of world toothbrush output; custom logos easy | 10,000 pieces |
| Bedding | Nantong (Jiangsu) | Sheets, duvet covers, mattress protectors | 500 sets |
| Towels | Gaoyang (Hebei) | Cotton bath towels, fast repeats on standard weights | 1,000 pieces |
| Cleaning gear and sundries | Jinhua (Zhejiang) and Linyi (Shandong) | Brooms, trash bags, disposable cutlery in bulk volumes | Mixed carton orders |
| Smart home hardware | Shenzhen | Wi-Fi thermostats, cameras, voice hubs; OEM on ready platforms | 500 to 1,000 units |
| Smart plugs and simple sensors | Guangzhou | Value tier with CE and RoHS paperwork in place | 1,000 units |
| Novelty and small-batch gadgets | Yiwu (Zhejiang) | App-controlled mini devices, low minimums, fast design tweaks | 50 to 100 units |
| Apparel and wigs | Dongguan, Hangzhou, Xuchang, Shantou | Womenswear, wedding gowns, wigs at 60% of world output, underwear | 300 to 1,000 pieces |
Kitchen, appliances and housewares
Shunde handles the mid and upper tier: better motors, better finishes, factories that have exported to Europe for twenty years. Cixi sits underneath it and wins on price for anything that plugs in and does one job. Yongkang is the metals hub, and it is where drinkware and cookware get their tooling. If your product crosses two of these, split the order rather than forcing one factory to do both.
Plastics, storage and everyday items
Huangyan’s mold industry is the reason a storage box from Taizhou can land 30% under a comparable quote elsewhere. For mixed cartons of sundries, Yiwu’s market rows let you fill a container across twenty suppliers, which suits first-time importers testing a range. Jinhua and Linyi cover the unglamorous volume end: brooms, trash bags, disposable cutlery.
Textiles, bedding and apparel
Nantong runs on bed linen with short repeats. Gaoyang in Hebei does towels by weight and weave, and a standard spec repeats in under three weeks. Apparel spreads wider: Dongguan and Hangzhou for womenswear, Suzhou and Chaozhou for wedding dresses, Xuchang for wigs, Shantou for underwear, Jinjiang for sports shoes. Each of those sub-hubs has its own price band, so treat “apparel” as six different searches rather than one.
Smart home and electronics
Shenzhen is where you go for anything with a radio in it and for OEM work on an existing platform. Guangzhou covers the value tier, smart plugs and basic sensor kits, usually with certification files ready to hand over. Yiwu is the test bench: minimums near 100 units, vendors willing to modify a design for a niche, and enough novelty stock to fill a mixed container cheaply. Certification is the dividing line. If your market enforces CE, FCC or UKCA paperwork, buy where the files already exist rather than where the quote is lowest.
What changes when you buy inside the hub
Three practical differences come up on almost every project. Tooling quotes drop, because the mold shop is a bicycle ride from the assembly line and competes for your revision work. Lead times compress, because components arrive in hours rather than crossing provinces. And sample iteration gets faster in a way that compounds: your third sample can be in your hands two weeks earlier, which can decide whether you hit the season or watch it pass.
Price bands still vary inside a hub, sometimes by a factor of two. Location narrows the range. It does not replace quoting three factories against each other.
How to work a hub without flying there
Start with the hub’s trade platform: the Canton Fair for appliances and electronics, Yiwu’s market rows for sundries, and the local show calendars for textiles. Then narrow to five factories whose photos show their own production line rather than a stock showroom. Ask each for two things that are hard to fake: a short video of the line running your product type, and the certificate numbers you can verify on the issuing body’s site.
Order samples from all five. Discard the two that arrive late or wrong. Quote the remaining three against a written spec, and keep the spec identical so the comparison means something. That process takes about three weeks from a standing start, and it works from any time zone.
A local partner on the ground changes the economics again, mostly by collapsing the time between “something looks wrong” and “someone is standing in the factory”. That is the part of cluster buying that email cannot replicate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Yiwu a factory or a market?
Both, and the difference matters. Yiwu’s district hosts factories for novelty and low-tooling goods, but the famous market halls are mostly trading companies reselling from factories across Zhejiang. For standard catalog items that is fine and often cheaper in mixed volumes. For a product with your own tooling, buy from the factory floor, not a market stall.
Do I have to buy inside the listed hub?
No, but you should know what you are paying for when you do not. A capable factory outside the cluster can still be the right answer for a simple product with no tooling. Expect a 10% to 25% price premium on component-heavy goods, and ask directly where their molds and key components come from.
How many hubs should one order span?
One per product family, and rarely more than three per container. Multi-hub orders add consolidation cost and inspection time, so they pay off only when the savings per family are larger than the extra freight and paperwork. A consolidated load from two adjacent clusters in Zhejiang is easy. Six provinces in one container is a project.
Where to start
Send us your product and target volume, and we will tell you which cluster it belongs to, which two or three factories we would quote first, and what the realistic price band looks like this quarter. Start on our sourcing services page, browse the industries we cover, or read what a China sourcing agent actually does before you commit a budget. When you are ready, send the spec for a free quote and we will come back within one working day.
