Wholesale Lighting from China
Two LED flood lights with the same housing and the same claimed 50W can differ in factory price by a factor of three. The difference is inside: the driver. In lighting, the fixture shell is the cheapest part and the driver is the part that fails, so a quotation that looks like a bargain is sometimes a bargain-grade driver wearing a good heatsink. Buyers who compare fixtures only by wattage and lumen claims on the box keep discovering this at month eight, when the failure rate data arrives.
The second trap is paperwork. CE marking for lighting is self-declared in most cases, which means a factory can stamp CE on a carton without anyone having tested anything. US-bound goods need UL or ETL listing, which is genuinely lab-verified and correspondingly pricier. Knowing which claims are audited and which are printable makes a real difference to your risk.
Select Trade has sourced out of Guzhen in Zhongshan for five years, from bulb programs to outdoor flood light projects, and the driver is the first thing we look at in any quotation review. Cluster map and price bands below.
Where the factories are
Guzhen anchors the category, with satellites that matter for specific lines.
| Cluster | City | Strengths | Typical MOQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guzhen lighting capital | Zhongshan, Guangdong | LED bulbs, panels, downlights, chandeliers, full accessory market within one town | 500-1,000 pcs bulbs, 200-500 panels |
| Xiaolan | Zhongshan, Guangdong | Drivers, ballasts, locksets and hardware components | Component volumes |
| Jiangmen / Heshan | Jiangmen, Guangdong | Outdoor fixtures, flood and street light housings, die-casting | 200-500 pcs |
| Shenzhen belt | Shenzhen, Guangdong | High-end LED modules, smart lighting, driver engineering | 500-1,000 pcs |
Guzhen’s accessory market means one order can mix fixture SKUs across factories and still consolidate locally, which cuts inland cost. Our industries overview lists the rest of the map.
Price ranges you should expect
Indicative ex-works bands; driver brand alone moves these numbers by 30% or more.
| Product type | Factory price range | MOQ | Lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| LED bulb A60, 5-9W | $0.30-0.90 per pc | 1,000-5,000 pcs | 15-20 days |
| LED panel 600x600mm | $3.00-8.00 per pc | 200-500 pcs | 20-25 days |
| LED downlight 7-15W | $1.50-5.00 per pc | 500-1,000 pcs | 18-25 days |
| LED flood light 30-100W | $3.00-12.00 per pc | 200-500 pcs | 20-30 days |
| LED strip, 2835/5050 | $0.80-2.50 per meter | 1,000-2,000 m | 12-18 days |
Component prices (LED chips, drivers, aluminum) move monthly, so use these bands for planning and confirm each project against a live quotation.
Treat the driver as the product
Name the driver brand in the PO (for example a specific series from a named manufacturer) and require the driver datasheet with the quotation. A named-driver quote will run 20-40% above a no-name one on the same fixture, and the failure-rate difference over 10,000 hours is exactly why. For any project light, also ask for the driver’s operating temperature rating, because sealed outdoor housings cook underrated drivers.
Know what CE and UL actually promise
CE for most lighting is a self-declaration backed by an EMC and LVD test file; ask for the actual test report and check the lamp model on it, since stamping a report from a different model is routine. UL or ETL listing means a North American lab certified the product and will audit the factory quarterly, which is why US-listed SKUs cost more. If your channel requires UL, confirm the listing file is in the factory’s name, not borrowed.
Measure flicker and lumens yourself
A $30 lux meter and a phone slow-motion camera catch most claims. Lux at one meter against the datasheet exposes inflated lumen numbers, and flicker shows as banding in slow-motion video. Write acceptance limits (for example lux within 10% of claim, no visible banding) into the inspection checklist. Cheap fixtures fail these two tests more than any other.
Quality risks specific to this category
Capacitor aging in undersized drivers, solder joint cracking from carton vibration in sea freight, color temperature drift between production batches (watch bin consistency, specify SDCM 5 or better), IP-rated outdoor fixtures with unsealed cable glands, and rusting screws on housings stored in humid warehouses. All five belong on the pre-shipment checklist, and all five are invisible in factory photos. The extended notes are in our Zhongshan lighting sourcing guide; our services page covers how audits and inspections are bundled.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need CE for Europe and UL for the US, or does one cover both?
They are separate systems. CE covers EU/EEA market access, UL or ETL listing is expected for US retail channels though it is not legally mandatory for all products. Budget for both if you sell into both markets; testing cannot be reused across them.
Why do quotes for the same 50W flood light vary by 3x?
Driver brand, LED chip grade, housing wall thickness and actual versus claimed wattage. The cheapest quote is often a 30W real-output unit labeled 50W. Compare the bill of materials line by line before comparing prices.
What MOQ and lead time for a first lighting order?
Stock bulbs start at 1,000-5,000 pieces, panels and downlights at 200-500. Lead time runs 15-30 days depending on driver stock. Custom housing tooling adds $5,000-20,000 and 30-45 days.
How do I check color consistency across a batch?
Light 20 units from different cartons side by side on a white wall. Visible shade differences mean poor binning; specify SDCM 5 or tighter in the PO and ask for the bin code on the LED reel labels during inspection.
