Wholesale Ceramic Mugs 350 ml from China
The ceramic mug is the classic promotional and retail item, and the supply chain is one of the deepest in China: whole towns exist to make cups. That depth is an advantage and a trap, because the same shape can be produced across a quality range wide enough to hold both a gift shop souvenir and a restaurant grade vessel, and the difference never shows in a product photograph.

The failures: the glaze carries lead or cadmium on a decorated surface that touches the mouth, the handle snaps off in a dish rack because the join was pressed by hand, or the decal fades after a dishwasher month. Each one is a compliance or durability story with a test behind it.
The category context, including which cup hubs make what, is in our wholesale home goods overview.
Clay body, glaze and the decoration
Mugs are made from stoneware or porcelain bodies, fired once or twice, and glazed. The glaze is the food contact surface, and its heavy metal release is regulated in every major market; decoration adds a second surface where the rules apply differently depending on whether it touches the rim or lip zone.
Handles are attached by hand before firing, and the join is the mechanical weak point. Microwave and dishwasher suitability are functions of the body, the glaze and the decoration together, which is why suitability claims are specified rather than assumed. For the hub map, see our cup factories by material guide.
Specifications and minimum order
Clay, glaze and kiln energy set the price, and they move, so live figures come with the quotation. Fix these points.
| Specification | What to confirm before you order |
|---|---|
| Body | Stoneware or porcelain, with the firing temperature |
| Capacity | Millilitres to the brim and to the working fill line |
| Glaze | Food contact release tests for the destination market |
| Decoration | Decal or hand print, and the rim or lip zone rules |
| Handle | Join method and the load the handle must take |
| Suitability | Microwave, dishwasher and thermal shock requirements stated |
| Minimum order | Thousands per shape and decoration in practice; stock shapes with your decal carry the lowest floor |
Our minimum order is 1 piece, so the fired, glazed and printed sample is approved before any production commitment. The production minimum follows the shape and decoration, and we confirm both routes, stock and custom, in writing. Our sourcing service coordinates the kiln plants and the decal printers.
The lip zone is where compliance is won
Food contact rules for ceramics treat the surfaces differently: the rim and the lip zone, where the mouth touches, carry the strictest heavy metal release limits, and a decoration that is legal on the body can be illegal on the rim. This single fact decides more mug designs than any aesthetic choice, and discovering it after the decals are printed is an expensive education.
Handle strength is the second mechanical question. A handle that survives a warehouse survives a dish rack, and the load test is simple: suspend the filled mug by the handle. We write the test into the order. Our quality assurance service covers the compliance paperwork as part of the order flow.
What belongs in the purchase order
- Body type and firing temperature
- Capacity with tolerance, and the working fill line
- Glaze food contact tests for the destination market, rim zone included
- Decoration method and the rim rule compliance
- Handle load requirement and the join inspection standard
- Packing: dividers, carton compression and the maximum breakage rate agreed
Checks that catch the repeat failures
- Handle suspension. Hang filled bulk mugs by the handle; the weak joins crack in the first minute.
- Rim rule check. Match the decoration position against the destination market’s lip zone definition.
- Dishwasher cycle. Run bulk mugs through a machine cycle ten times; decal fade and glaze crazing show early.
- Thermal shock. Pour boiling water into a cold bulk mug; a weak body or glaze cracks now, not in the customer’s kitchen.
- Glaze paperwork. Match the heavy metal release report to the glaze lot and your production dates.
These checks are standard work in a pre shipment inspection, and our factory inspection service covers ceramic plants. For the fuller method, see our pre shipment inspection guide.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the rim such a big deal?
Because that is where the drinker’s mouth touches, and regulators set the strictest limits there. A decorated rim can be the single item that makes an otherwise compliant mug unsellable in your market. Design the decoration to the rule, not the other way round.
Can I order a small run of custom mugs?
On a stock shape with your decal, yes, and that is the standard first order. A custom shape means a mould and a kiln commitment with a higher minimum. Our minimum order is 1 piece for sampling either route.
What fails first on a cheap mug?
The handle join, then the decal. Both are visible on bulk units within a minute of testing, which makes this category one of the fastest to inspect properly.
