Wholesale Kitchenware from China
Kitchenware looks like a safe category because the products are simple. It is the opposite. Food-contact rules are strict in every major market, coatings fail in ways that only show up after two weeks of home use, and a 40-cent saving on a non-stick pan can turn into a returns wave that erases the margin on the whole container.
The second trap is the stainless grade. 304 and 201 steel look identical, weigh almost the same, and cost about 25% apart. A factory that swaps the grade between sample and shipment has changed nothing you can see at the factory gate, and the complaint arrives from your customer rather than your inspector.
Select Trade has run cookware and small appliance programs out of Guangdong and Zhejiang for five years, mostly for European and North American buyers. The notes below cover the cluster map, realistic factory prices, and the checks that keep this category profitable.
Where the factories are
| Cluster | City | Strengths | Typical MOQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small appliances | Shunde, Foshan (Guangdong) | Blenders, air fryers, fans; deep export network | 500 to 1,000 units |
| Budget appliances | Cixi (Zhejiang) | Juicers, kettles, heaters at sharp price points | 1,000 units |
| Stainless cookware | Yongkang (Zhejiang) | Pots, pans, flasks, cutlery; local tooling | 1,000 units |
| Commercial kitchen | Xingfu Town, Boxing (Shandong) | About 40% of China commercial kitchen supply | By project |
| Knives and scissors | Yangjiang (Guangdong) | About 70% of national output | 2,000 pieces |
Cluster choice here is mostly about what the local tool shops already make. A factory that runs your base shape every week will beat a cheaper quote from outside the cluster on defect rate, and the difference shows up in your returns rather than in the quotation.

| Vacuum flask 500 ml | $2.10 to $5.00 | 1,000 units | 30 to 40 days |
| Glass storage set | $3.50 to $9.00 | 2,000 sets | 35 to 45 days |
| Countertop blender | $9 to $24 | 500 units | 40 to 50 days |
Verify the stainless grade with an instrument, not a certificate
Ask for the melt number on the mill certificate, then confirm it at inspection with a handheld spectrometer. The test costs a few dollars per batch and it is the only check that reliably catches a grade swap. Certificates get resubmitted from a previous order; a spectrometer reading does not.
Test coatings the way a kitchen does
Non-stick and enamel coatings fail in dishwashers, on induction hobs and under metal utensils, not on a showroom shelf. Run a dishwasher cycle and an induction test on samples pulled from the actual production run, and put coating weight and layer count in the written spec.
Where the negotiation room is
Unit prices in this category move with steel and aluminum more than with bargaining. The real savings sit in packaging, handle assembly, and whether the factory is already running your base unit for another buyer. Ask what the price becomes at 3,000 and 10,000 units.
Quality risks specific to this category
Welded handles that loosen, lids that stop seating after a freight cycle, and loose rivets on cookware sets. All three are visible in an AQL inspection and none of them show on a photo. Inspect before the balance payment and include a drop test on packed cartons.

Frequently asked questions
What MOQ for custom-branded cookware?
Most cookware factories start near 1,000 units per shape, and lower for a logo change on an existing body. Custom colors or a new mold push the effective minimum to whatever amortizes the tool. Quote three volumes and the curve will show where your order sits.
Which certificates apply to kitchenware for the EU and US?
For the EU, food-contact compliance under Regulation 1935/2004, plus LFGB where retailers ask for it. For the US, FDA food-contact rules. Electronics need CE, and induction bases need the relevant EMC files. Ask for certificate numbers you can verify rather than scans.
How is 304 stainless actually verified?
By instrument, at the factory, on the current batch. A spectrometer separates 304 from 201 in seconds. Paper claims are worth having and worth nothing on their own.
When should seasonal cookware be ordered?
For a Q4 retail date, finish sampling by June and start production by August. Container space tightens from September, and Chinese New Year closes factories for two to four weeks either side of the holiday.
