Wholesale Hardware and Tools from China

Tools are the easiest category to buy wrong. A wrench that looks right and feels right can be soft steel that rounds off on the first bolt, and nothing on the box will tell you. The difference between a professional grade and a throwaway tool is metallurgy and heat treatment, neither of which photographs.

The category also splits cleanly by cluster. Hand tools come out of Yongkang and the Shandong belt, power tools from Jiangmen and the Yangtze delta, and abrasive and consumable products from scattered specialized towns. Buying a hand tool from a power tool factory gets you a trading company margin on both.

Select Trade has run hardware programs for industrial distributors and retail chains for six years, mostly in Europe and North America. Below are the clusters, the grade rules, and the tests that separate the two.

Where the factories are

Cluster City Strengths Typical MOQ
Hand tools Yongkang (Zhejiang) Wrenches, sockets, pliers at volume 500 to 1,000 units
Power tools Jiangmen (Guangdong) Drills, angle grinders, OEM platforms 300 to 500 units
Power tool accessories Nantong and Yancheng (Jiangsu) Bits, blades, discs at deep volumes 2,000 pieces
Abrasives Various (Shandong, Jiangsu) Grinding and cutting discs, sandpaper 5,000 pieces
Tool storage Yongkang and Ningbo Tool boxes, trolleys, bags 500 units

Yongkang is the stainless and metal town, and its tool district runs from hand tools to lawn equipment. Jiangmen in Guangdong and the Shanghai periphery hold the power tool assembly plants, many of them building for global brands under license.

Test hardness, not hardness claims

Ask for the heat treatment spec in writing, then test it: a file skates on hardened steel and bites into soft steel. Torque testing a sample from the production run costs less than a single warranty claim, and it is the only check that catches a steel substitution.

Check the finish where corrosion starts

Chrome plating over poor preparation peels at the edges and the joints. Look at the transition from plated to unplated surface, the inside of a socket, and the throat of a plier. Those three spots tell you more about a factory finish than the showroom sample ever will.

Where the negotiation room is

Packaging, finish grade and whether the tool carries a brand license are the levers. Dual-color dips on handles, blow-molded cases and printed blister cards all add cost that your market may not pay for. Quote two finish grades and decide deliberately.

Power tools need the file, and the spares

CE and, where applicable, EMC and noise documentation must exist and be transferable. Equally important is the spares question: carbon brushes, chucks and switches should be orderable separately, because a power tool with no spares path becomes a warranty cost rather than a product.

Frequently asked questions

What MOQ for private-label tools?

Laser-marked logos on existing tools start near 500 to 1,000 units. Custom colors and molded cases push the minimum up, because the tooling and the color run are fixed costs. Accessories such as bits and discs start much higher in piece count because unit prices are small.

Which certificates apply to tools?

Hand tools carry no mandatory scheme, which makes the spec and the inspection the real control. Power tools need CE and EMC files for Europe and UL or ETL recognition where retail chains require it for the US. Ask for certificate numbers you can verify on the issuing body site.

How do I compare two tool quotes fairly?

On the same written spec, at the same hardness, finish and packaging grade, with the same accessories in the box. Anything else compares two different products, and the cheaper one usually costs more per year of use.

Is OEM for a known brand a risk?

Producing for a brand that owns the design is normal. Producing a copy of a branded product for export is not, and it puts the whole shipment at risk at customs. The line is whether the design belongs to you or to someone else, and it is worth drawing before the deposit.
