Wholesale Oil Filters from China
The oil filter is the highest rotating part in the aftermarket and the most commodified: a can, a media, two valves and a gasket. Inside that list lives the whole quality story, because the filter’s job is to hold particles while letting oil flow, and the parts that do it, media grade and valve calibration, are invisible from outside the can.

The failures: media that clogs early or passes what it should catch, bypass valves that open too easily so unfiltered oil circulates, and gaskets that flatten or leak. An oil filter failure can cost an engine, which makes this the category where the cheap filter is the expensive one.
All three are testable. The category context is in our wholesale auto parts overview.
Media, valves and the gasket
Filter media is graded by efficiency and capacity: how much of a particle size it captures, and how much dirt it holds before flow drops. Better media costs more per can and lasts an oil change interval; the trick in this category is media that looks the same in a cut open can and performs differently on a rig.
The bypass valve protects the engine when the media clogs, opening at a calibrated pressure; the anti drainback valve keeps oil in the filter so the engine gets pressure at startup. The gasket is the interface with the engine, and its compound and shape decide the leak rate. All three are specification lines with tests.
Specifications and minimum order
Steel and media prices move with raw materials, so live figures come with the quotation. Fix these points.
| Specification | What to confirm before you order |
|---|---|
| Media | Efficiency and capacity grades, with the test standard |
| Bypass valve | Opening pressure calibrated and stated |
| Anti drainback | Valve fitted and functional, stated per model |
| Gasket | Compound named, with the sealing and compression spec |
| Can | Steel thickness and the burst standard |
| Fitment | Thread, size and application list with part numbers |
| Pedido mínimo | Thousands per part number in practice; production lines run fast once set up |
Our minimum order is 1 piece, so a cut open, valve checked sample is approved before any production commitment. The production minimum follows the part number and line setup, and we confirm it against your application list. Our sourcing service screens the filter plants and their media suppliers as one chain.
Cut one open, then talk price
The filter industry’s honest evaluation is the cut open: media pleat count and quality, valve presence and construction, gasket compound, can thickness. It takes five minutes and a utility knife, and it ends more supplier debates than any quotation. We cut bulk units during inspection, not samples selected for the visit.
Valve calibration is the second bench item. A bypass valve that opens at the wrong pressure either starves the engine of filtration or defeats it, and the rig test settles the number. Our quality assurance service writes the cut open and the valve test into the order.
What belongs in the purchase order
- Media efficiency and capacity grades with the test standard
- Bypass valve opening pressure, stated and tested
- Anti drainback valve presence and function
- Gasket compound and compression spec
- Can steel thickness with the burst standard
- Fitment data with part numbers, and box labelling with barcodes
Checks that catch the repeat failures
- Cut open. Open bulk units per lot; media, valves and gasket answer every quality question at once.
- Valve rig test. Test bypass opening pressure on a sample against the stated figure.
- Gasket check. Compress and recover a sample of gaskets; a set that does not recover is a leak.
- Can burst sample. Verify can strength against the standard on a destruct sample per batch.
- Fitment verification. Check thread and dimensions against the application data on a bulk sample.
These checks are standard work in a pre shipment inspection, and our factory inspection service covers filter plants. For the fuller method, see our pre shipment inspection guide.
Preguntas frecuentes
Why do identical looking filters perform differently?
Media grade, valve calibration and gasket compound are all invisible from outside the can, and each is a cost line a shortcut can cut. The cut open test on bulk units makes the invisible visible in five minutes.
Can we build to our own part numbers?
Yes, with your labelling, box design and application data. The fitment database is the valuable part for a distributor, and we keep it authoritative on your side rather than trusting a supplier’s list. Our minimum order is 1 piece for sampling any part number.
What fails first on a cheap filter?
The bypass valve calibration, then the gasket. Both are bench checks on bulk units, and both are cheaper to catch in Guangzhou than to explain to a customer with an engine light.
