Wholesale Muslin Swaddle Sets from China
Muslin swaddles are the gift side of the baby textile trade: layered cotton gauze, generous square cuts, printed in the soft palette the category is known for. The product is simple, which is exactly why the differences between a good one and a cheap one are invisible until the first wash, and why the specification has to carry the quality instead of the photograph.

The recurring failures: the open weave snags and pulls on the first use because the yarn was loosely twisted, the generous square shrinks to a modest one after washing, and the soft hand that sold the sample was a finishing wash that disappears in the customer’s machine.
All three are measurable in the factory. The category context is in our wholesale baby products overview.
Weave, layers and the hand that sells
Muslin is an open plain weave of fine cotton, sold in two, four or more layers. Layer count is the headline number, but yarn twist and weave density decide whether the layers stay bonded and whether the fabric pills. A four layer muslin with slack yarn feels plush in the showroom and pills in the laundry.
Softness comes from two sources: the cotton itself, and a prewash or finishing wash at the mill. The finishing wash is the one that does not survive the customer, so the specification should require prewashed fabric that is soft because of the fibre and the weave, then verify softness after a home style wash rather than out of the bag.
Specifications and minimum order
Cotton prices move with the crop, and printing method changes the quote, so live figures come with the quotation. Fix these points.
| Specification | What to confirm before you order |
|---|---|
| Layers | Two, four or more, with the total weight in grams per square metre |
| Yarn | Combed cotton, twist level, and whether the yarn is slubbed |
| Size | Cut size in centimetres, with the wash shrinkage tolerance stated |
| Prewash | Whether fabric is prewashed, and the shrinkage the factory holds |
| Reactive dyes for colour fastness, and the wash grade | |
| Edge finish | Serged or hemmed edges, with the thread named |
| Pedido mínimo | Set by printing runs and dye batches; a design per colourway usually needs a few hundred sets |
Our minimum order is 1 piece, so a washed sample is approved before any production commitment. The production minimum follows the print run, and we confirm it against your colourway plan. Our sourcing service screens the weaving and sewing plants.
The wash test is the whole product
Every claim a swaddle makes, softness, size, absorbency, layers that stay together, is a claim about the washed product. That is why the inspection method in this category is built around washing: wash bulk units the way a parent would, then measure, feel and look. A swaddle that is only beautiful out of the bag is a refund in three weeks.
Print fastness is the second wash question. Reactive dyes bond to the fibre and survive; cheap pigment prints sit on the surface and crack. Both print the same photograph. Our quality assurance service writes the wash protocol into the order.
What belongs in the purchase order
- Layer count and total weight, with the yarn and weave named
- Cut size with wash shrinkage tolerance, tested on bulk fabric
- Prewash requirement and the softness standard after a home style wash
- Print method and wash fastness grade per colourway
- Edge finish and thread specification
- Packing: band or box per set, warning text and carton limits
Checks that catch the repeat failures
- Wash and measure. Wash bulk sets hot and tumbled, then measure against the size chart; shrinkage beyond the tolerance shows here.
- Snag test. Pull a fingernail across the washed surface; loose yarn snags immediately.
- Layer bond. Separate the layers at a corner after washing; delamination means the bonding wash was skipped or overdone.
- Print rub. Rub a printed area wet and dry; pigment prints streak where reactive dyes hold.
- Hand after wash. Feel the washed fabric against the sample; a hardness change means the softness was a finishing trick.
A pre shipment inspection that includes washing catches all five, and our factory inspection service covers textile plants as a category. Our inspection teams work to a written protocol per product family.
Preguntas frecuentes
How many layers should I buy?
Four layers is the commercial standard for swaddling because it breathes while holding, and two layers reads as a light blanket. The layer count only delivers when the yarn and bonding are right, so judge the washed fabric, not the label. Our minimum order is 1 piece for sampling any layer count.
Can we do custom prints?
Yes, by rotary or digital printing depending on volume and colour count. Digital carries short runs; rotary rewards volume. We quote both when your design sits between them, and the production minimum follows the method.
Why does my sample feel softer than the bulk?
Almost always a finishing wash applied to the sample batch only, or a lighter weave in the bulk lot. Both are caught by washing bulk units during inspection, which is why the wash test is written into the order rather than left to chance.
