Each fibre has a character: water hyacinth is chunky and textured, seagrass is smooth and tight, straw is classic but dry, and paper rope is the modern consistent option that weaves like rattan and resists humidity. Natural fibres vary between harvests, which makes a retained physical sample part of the order.
Structure divides into framed and unframed. A wire or wooden frame holds the silhouette under load; an unframed weave relies on tension and fold technique, and it slumps when empty. Handles are the load point either way, and how they are anchored, wrapped into the weave or fixed to the frame, decides whether they survive a full basket.

Moisture is the whole risk
Natural fibre carries its harvest moisture, and fibre packed damp grows mould in a container crossing the ocean. The control is a moisture content requirement measured before baling, plus packing that breathes rather than seals the fibre in plastic. A musty container is the most expensive way to learn this.
The second risk is uniformity. Hand woven product varies between weavers and workshops, and the retained physical sample is the contract: bulk is checked against the sample for weave tension, colour and trim, not against a photograph. Checks that catch the repeat failures
- Smell test. Open bulk cartons and smell; mustiness means moisture got past the drying step.
- Moisture meter. Meter a sample of bulk baskets at loading; the reading settles disputes before the container closes.
- Handle load. Fill a bulk basket to the rated load and lift by the handles; tear outs show immediately.
- Shape retention. Load and empty a bulk basket; slump means the frame or tension was skipped.
- Sample comparison. Compare bulk against the retained sample for weave, colour and trim in daylight.

Which material should I choose?

Are unframed baskets acceptable?
For light storage and decor use, yes, and they cost less. For anything a customer will fill heavily, the frame is the difference between a product and a return. Decide by load, write it in the PO, and test it on bulk units.
Why do smells happen after arrival and not at the factory?
Because the container is the incubator. Fibre that passes a quick factory check can still be above the safe moisture level, and four weeks at sea turns that into mould. The moisture meter at loading is the control that actually works.
