Wholesale Pet Supplies from China
Pet products carry a risk most buyers underestimate: your customer is not the user. A dog will test a chew toy past every specification you wrote, and the review that follows lands on the product page rather than in your claim letter. Sourcing this category means testing for the animal, not for the shopper.
The category also spans three very different supply chains. Food and treats are a regulated export business with registration and traceability requirements. Hard goods are a plastics and textiles business. Smart feeders and cameras are an electronics business with certification files. Treating them as one category is the usual first mistake.
Select Trade has run pet programs out of Shandong, Zhejiang and Guangdong for four years, for US and European retail chains. The notes below cover the cluster map, factory price bands, and the checks that keep chew toys out of your returns queue.
Where the factories are
| Cluster | City | Strengths | Typical MOQ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pet food and treats | Liaocheng, Weifang (Shandong) | About 60% of China pet food output; export-registered plants | Per formula |
| Cat trees and furniture | Shandong and Hebei | Board, sisal and plush assembly at scale | 200 to 500 units |
| Chew toys and leashes | Wenzhou, Taizhou (Zhejiang) | Nylon, rubber and textile products | 1,000 units |
| Litter boxes and bowls | Taizhou and Ningbo (Zhejiang) | Injection-molded plastics with local tooling | 1,000 units |
| Smart feeders and cameras | Shenzhen and Dongguan (Guangdong) | OEM electronics platforms, certification in place | 500 units |
Cluster choice matters more here than in most categories, because the three supply chains barely overlap. A factory that makes excellent cat trees has nothing to do with the plant that exports treats, and asking one to quote both wastes a week.

Treat material claims as testable statements
Nylon bones, rubber toys and rope products all have a spec sheet and a reality. Ask for the material grade in writing, then test density, tensile and bite resistance on samples pulled from the production run. A toy that survives a beagle in the showroom and fails with a mastiff in Ohio is a specification problem.
Check stitching and filling on soft goods
Pet beds and plush toys fail at the seam and at the zipper. Pull tests on seams, a check of filling weight against the contract, and a wash test catch most of it. None of the three needs a lab, and all three belong in the inspection brief.
Where the negotiation room is
Fabric weight, filling density and packaging hold the money, not the headline unit price. A heavier canvas on a dog bed costs less than the returns it prevents. Ask the factory to quote two fabric weights side by side and compare landed cost.
Smart devices need the certification file, not the logo
Automatic feeders and cameras are electronics with firmware, power supplies and, in some models, radio modules. Buy where the CE or FCC file exists and can be transferred, and test a unit pulled from the actual run. A certificate a trading company will not share is a warning, not a detail.

Frequently asked questions
What MOQ for private-label pet products?
Hard goods and accessories usually start near 500 to 1,000 units per design. Printed packaging pushes the minimum up, because the plate and setup cost are fixed. Food and treats are quoted per formula and per registration, so minimums are higher and lead times longer.
Which certificates apply to pet products?
Pet food export requires registration with Chinese customs and, for the US, compliance with FDA animal feed rules; the EU runs its own feed hygiene requirements. Toys and textiles have no single mandatory scheme, which makes the written spec and the inspection the real control points.
How is cat tree quality judged?
By the particleboard density, the sisal rope wrapping and the plate thickness at the joints. Wobble in the showroom becomes a return at home. Ask for the board specification in writing and check stability on assembled samples at inspection.
Can I mix several pet SKUs in one container?
Yes, and it is the normal way to start. Plan the mix so heavy goods sit at the bottom and carton marks stay scannable. Expect a consolidation fee and an extra day at the warehouse, both trivial against the freight you save.
